Suzanne studied Studio Art and Art History and received her BA in Fine Arts from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA. During this time she turned her attention from painting and drawing to find a passion for 3 dimensional art and expression. She took her first ceramics study program under potter and professor Stephen Forbes DeSole and was hooked. Suzanne says, “I learned all aspects of the art from hand-building to sculpting, but found my groove in throwing pottery on the wheel.”
After college, Suzanne continued studying all aspects of ceramic studio operations and more advanced throwing skills from the program offered by the Callenwolde Fine Arts Center in Atlanta, GA. She also continued her studies in 3D surface design techniques in Abiquiu, New Mexico at the Ghostranch; in Farmington, PA at the Touchstone Center for Crafts; as well as in Brasstown, NC at the venerable John C. Campbell Folk Art School. In 2016, she established her home studio to create her work. She specializes in creating functional, beautiful hand-thrown pottery including dinnerware, travel mugs, and sculptural pots. All her pieces are hand-crafted, one at a time, using traditional methods. Her work is represented in galleries and shops located in Georgia, Alaska, North Carolina, Vermont, Colorado, Wisconsin, Michigan, Connecticut, California, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Her pottery is included at the Arts Clayton Gallery gift store, Arts Alliance Gallery of Macon, GA and, she is currently a participating artist in the Blue Door Gallery co-op of Carrollton, GA and a member of the Newnan-Coweta Art Association as well as the Carrollton Artist Guild.
She has exhibited her work in regional and national shows such as:
- Fire & Ice show in Macon, GA
- Fired Works show in Macon, GA.
- Artisans on the Square Celebrating Clay, Greensboro, GA
- SIP A Ceramic Cup Show in Savannah, GA
- Dirty South Cup Competition in River Oaks, LA
- Blue Ridge 3D Off-The-Wall exhibit

Bette Schumann
Bette Schumann has been named Newnan-Coweta Art Association’s Artist of the Month for the month of July.
The life of this artist has been anything but boring, with many unusual twists and turns, including the route which lead to Sharpsburg, Georgia. It began in Minneapolis, her birthplace, through Chicago, to Cleveland, Ohio, where she met husband Richard, and raised their five children. Then the Lord called the family into full time Christian ministry which took them to Morehead City, N.C., Greensboro, N.C., San Marcos, Texas, and the Fort Worth area in Texas, and finally, to Sharpsburg (according to their pastor, “God’s Country”). Bette loves her quaint little cottage on Clearwater Lake, because it is a great place for their grandchildren to fish. (fourteen grandchildren!)
Art has always been woven in and out of Bette’s life, in various forms, but not as seriously as in recent years. Her father was a professional artist, and her mother was an art hobbyist. “I’ve painted everything from murals on armoires to church buses, stenciled walls in homes, designed and painted yard ornaments, and a lot of commissioned work from pets to Irish golfers. Most of her paintings are from photographs she takes herself or en plein-air. She especially enjoys the challenge of portraiture. “It is so exciting when the personality of the subject is suddenly there, often with the tiniest brushstroke.”
Raising her family, working as a registered nurse and instructor in a school of nursing, and, whenever possible, playing her violin, kept her from painting seriously for many years. Since her move to Sharpsburg, she has been teaching at Central Christian School and has resumed her passion for painting.
Bette paints primarily in oil, has been awarded numerous ribbons in local art shows including Best of Show in the Coweta County Fair, and has had several of her works selected to hang in the Georgia Capital Building in Atlanta. She has been juried into the Itinerant Gallery in Carrollton, GA., the Jackalope Gallery in Carrollton, GA., Southern River’s Gallery in Pine Mountain, GA., and the Bradley Street Gallery in Carrollton, GA. She is a member of the Newnan-Coweta Art Association and the Portrait Society of America.
She paints, as she does everything else in her life, for the glory of God.

Charles Tryon
Charles grew up in a very technical and science oriented family, but never forgot his passion for creativity and art. In college, he turned toward mathematics, and over the next 35 years, followed a career in engineering. However, over the past ten years or so, he has taken a journey back into actively pursuing the arts, focusing on clay and figurative sculpture.
His work communicates on different levels, from the utilitarian to a simple reflection of the beauty he sees around him. It may express a response of hope or fear or love, or the reality of light and darkness, or it may simply reflect the little child at play. His greatest joy is seeing the way his expressions touch the hearts and imaginations of those who see his work. Clay becomes a language to express thoughts, emotions, or insights for which there are no words.
As much as Charles loves to create, he also treasures the opportunity to teach others to experience that same joy. Young people are naturally drawn to clay. With a little instruction and encouragement, they quickly gain the confidence to create. In clay, the art flows naturally from their active imaginations.
The underlying thread in Charles’ journey has been growing to understand what it looks like to integrate the reality of his relationship with Christ and his expression as an artist. Charles continues learning to let the creative process reflect the complicated dynamic of Faith – something which is not always pretty or positive or well understood, but which carries underneath it the reality of Hope.

KENT APPLEGATE
Kent was born in Flagstaff Arizona but grew up in Guam where he lived for 17 years. His parents were both teachers, his mother taught art. His mother shared her love of art and taught Kent his way around the potters’ wheel in 1975. Extensive travel brought him into contact with many cultures and arts including the Far Eastern, European and Pacific Islander.
Kent’s working career involved being a mechanic then a teacher of auto mechanics, math, science and computers for 28 years. In 1993 he was reintroduced to the pottery wheel while his daughter was taking a summer pottery class. This then became his hobby for the next 20 years until it became a small business venture after his retirement.
The main focus of Kent’s pottery is simple, elegant, unique yet functional pieces that can be used in the kitchen.
Kent sells his pottery Saturdays at the Senoia Farmers Market and occasionally, other markets.
Kent will soon begin teaching pottery classes in Senoia.

JENNY JONES
I am a native of Newnan and Coweta County and a graduate of Newnan High School. I am a member of the Unity Baptist Church of Newnan, and the Newnan Coweta Art Association. After working for Newnan Utilities for 26 years as the Utility Billing Manager I retired in 2009. My two daughters, Aimee and Sarah, and grandchildren Jones, Lilly, Alana, Lucy, and Gracie are also Newnan Natives.
Needing a hobby in 1996, I began stenciling and doing wall murals in my own home. My mother, a craft painter, invited me to visit a craft painting class and also to an oil painting class in 1997 with Marge Groth and Jean Westbrook. My desire to paint grew and I began to buy woodwork, windows, glass objects, and any other materials using glass paint and acrylics. My favorite subjects to paint are landscapes, the ocean, and buildings, especially lighthouses. I love to use lots of color. Painting is very relaxing to me and I encourage others to paint. With much encouragement from my family, friends, and my students I plan to continue my love of painting for many years to come.
After retiring, I opened a much-needed Local Artist Gallery in 2011. The Gallery is Corner Arts Gallery, Studio, & Gift Shop, in beautiful downtown Newnan, Georgia. Corner Arts is located at 30 South Court Square. We offer many different types of art work created by over 35 local artists and now local author books. There are also classes and workshops scheduled for each day of the week, Monday thru Saturday, for ages 3 to Adult. We are closed on Wednesdays and Sundays. I am teaching classes in oils and acrylics which I took after Jean Westbrook stepped down from teaching.
In 2013 I began taking Pottery Classes with Andrea Boswell and I love hand building and creating. My current creations are pieces that hang, such as Fairy Doors and Hearts, Fairy Houses and more. I teach Paint your own Ceramics now as well at my gallery.
I hosted the Labor Day Arts & Crafts Festival around the Newnan Square in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2021. I have been a part of the NHS Class of 1977 Reunion Committee, Newnan Coweta Art Association Board, Main Street Newnan, and the Southern Hands Artist Tour 2017.

NANCY TWOMEY
Making jewelry became Nancy’s passion in 2010. However, since she was a child, she had always enjoyed creating things with her hands.
Jewelry making was new to Nancy, so it became a new avenue for her to try.
Nancy started off doing her first craft show which was The Hummingbird Festival in Hogansville, Ga. Each year, she continues to sign up to be a vendor at that Festival. Nancy enjoys meeting the public and has made new friends with other vendors and customers. She also had participated in the Newnan Market Day for 5 years with her friend Jean. At this market Nancy also met life-long friends. So, she guesses it isn’t just about the jewelry but how we connect over the jewelry pieces. Sometimes remembering a piece of her grandma’s jewelry used in a more modern twist will begin a conversation with her customers and friends.
Nancy is now retired and teaches about 5 jewelry making classes a month to adults and children.
Being a retired 6th grade teacher, she enjoys her kids’ class at The Corner Arts Gallery. They keep me attuned to the important aspects of the day.
She hopes you will come to take one of her classes! Her wish is for you to discover and enjoy a craft that is just right for you!
You can reach Nancy at: 770-630-1078 or at endesigns@charter.net

Gail Jensen
As a young girl, Gail Jensen knew that a passion of art would follow her throughout her life. She was inspired by her mother’s artistic abilities in the field of pottery and mosaics.
After earning a prior degree in fine arts, Gail attended a fused glass class in 1998 to satisfy her curiosity and was immediately hooked. She felt at home with the process of kiln-formed glass, as if she’d been waiting her whole life just to work in this medium. Since then, she has participated in numerous workshops throughout the country and strives to attend at least two per year. This constant source of inspiration, knowledge and technique has enabled Gail to fine-tune her glass art into her own distinctive style.
Gail’s artistic touch is evident throughout their creatively decorated home. Her inviting backyard is shaped with a beautiful swimming pool, unusual metal sculptures and whimsical furniture woven together by verdant landscaping that draws an immediate “wow” from first time visitors. Nestled amidst this capricious setting and bubbling with activity is Gail’s glass studio known as StudioGG.
Her work and studio have been featured in magazines and on HGTV’s television show “Look What I Did”. Wanting to give back to the glass community that has been so generous with information, Gail now teaches beginning through advanced fused glass classes as well.
For more information on Gail and her art please visit www.studiogg.com or give her a call at 770-598-7182

Vin (Vinayak) Godbole
American Impressionist painter
based in Georgia.
Impresso
Colors are imprinted on early infant stage memories when we are trying to make sense of lights that glare at us after birth. They often trigger unique mental reflexes.
When we see unexpected colors in a familiar scape it heightens our senses and relation with the painting. Color field genre is distinguishable as a composition of blocks of colors that talk to each other.
I use landscapes to maintain the realism to compose my paintings. Georgia pines feature a lot in my work.
I began my painting career as a portrait painter using oil and watercolors. In recent times, I exclusively use acrylics on various surfaces and application tools.
I prefer acrylics for their color integrity and deep spectrum pigments.

Andrea Faye
Andrea began working with clay in 2000 by taking a six-week pottery course through the Fayette County Parks and Recreation department. Little did she know that this weekly retreat from family and responsibilities would become a passion! Andrea continued to attend these classes for several years and developed her skills on the pottery wheel. However, she really enjoyed handbuilding with clay which, she believes, allowed for a greater range of artistic expression. In 2006, Andrea became a student of Karen Beswick a ceramic artist who specialized in Raku firing. Karen taught her this different clay firing technique and provided her with artistic instruction for several years. Sadly, Karen is no longer with us but she has left her legacy in her many students.
Andrea has continued her education in clay by attending workshops taught by such clay artist greats as: Curtis Denzel, Robin Hopper, Chris Grydner, Gerit Grimm, Shadow May and Bill Van Guilder.
Organizations such as Fine Arts and Crafts Entrepreneurs (FAACE), The Potters Guild, Newnan Coweta Arts Association, and Ceramics Daily have been a part of her art life.
Andrea is the founder of the Southern Hands Artist Studio Tour which is now in its’ tenth year and being run by a younger upcoming Artist, Carly Ellis.
Along with creating her own clay art, Andrea also instructs in an open studio class consisting of adults interested in creating, building and expressing with clay.
You can find her works at Blume, Southern Hands Artist Studio Tour, Fired Works, Fire and Ice, The Print Shop Gallery, AndreaFaye.com and her studio which you are welcome to visit. Just call for an appointment. 678-641-1247

TAMMY TROYER
Exposure to clay came at a very early age to me, spending summers with my great aunt in her ceramic studio assisting in pouring molds, cleaning green wear and glazing. Who would have thought that after 15 years in corporate America I would come back to it as a second career?
After the birth of my daughter, while looking for something to fulfill the artist inside me, I began taking pottery lessons at a local studio. There I apprenticed under the instructor who had a Master’s Degree in Ceramic Arts. Under his guidance, I was able to learn all aspects of clay and running a studio. When the studio closed, he asked me to assist in the development of the arts program at the YMCA-Ballantyne branch in Charlotte, N.C.
We fostered and taught classes until a transfer brought our family to Newnan, GA. Shortly after moving, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to teach classes at Artworks on the Square in Fayetteville until the doors closed. Seeking to be closer to home, I am now instructing at the Coweta County Parks and Recreation Department at the Harriet Alexander Arts Center.
The wonderful thing about teaching is sharing the knowledge with children and adults that was passed on to me without a formal college education. With a little instruction, anything can be made from clay. It is the most versatile form of artistic expression, in my opinion. My body of work is constantly changing but I find incorporating nature into projects the most satisfying.

Teresa Foshee
Teresa Foshee has always been an artist at heart, but life took her in other directions for a long time. She’s finally doing what she’s always wanted to do – explore, create, and design! Teresa is a photographer, potter, and sculptor. Teresa grew up in Illinois, near St. Louis, Missouri. She always loved to draw; and, as a child, she remembers spending hours drawing animals from pictures in her parents’ encyclopedias. She took some art classes in high school and then attended Harding University (Searcy, AR). Leaving her studies at the University behind, Teresa attended Sawyer Business College (St. Louis, MO) to become an Executive Secretary; upon graduation, she worked as an Administrative Assistant for many years, and in later years as the Sales Manager and Vice President of a small alcohol breath-testing company. Teresa and her husband and family moved to Georgia in 2003. In 2013, she went back to college to finish the art degree she had started so long ago. Teresa graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in Art & Design from LaGrange College in May, 2016 (Double Concentration: Ceramics & Sculpture and Photography). Although Teresa does enjoy photography, she loves working with clay! She began her journey into bas relief by creating bas relief tiles based on her photographic images (three of the four pieces displayed here are based on her architectural photography). As a photographer, Teresa is exploring possibilities that lie beyond traditional representational photographs by creating unique abstract designs with her images. Roof Dance in 3D is based on one of her abstract photographs. Teresa takes pleasure in the tactile quality of the surface when working with clay; she especially enjoys creating the rough texture on the architectural pieces. By carving out and building up the earthenware clay, the designs begin to emerge and take shape. Teresa’s other bas relief pieces (not displayed here) feature landscapes, music, still life, and every day scenes. She has added a new dimension to her work in clay by adding bas relief to her wheel-thrown vessels as well. Who knew playing with mud could be so much fun?
Teresa has 4 Bas relief tiles on display entitled:
Cubism in Clay
Arched Element
Grate Facade
Roof Dance in 3D
These tiles are not for sale.

KATE FERGUSON
Kate Ferguson has been an artist since she was in high school. That is where her life with clay came to be. Kate’s art teacher allowed her to take a pottery wheel home for Christmas break and she played on it her entire break.
After high school she went on to study at The Art Institute of Atlanta in the field of graphic design. Kate quickly realized that using computers and technology to make art was not her cup of tea. After many years and many colleges she received her 4th degree in studio art with a concentration in ceramics from Georgia State University.
Kate gets her inspiration from nature and organic forms as well as from the artist” Van Gogh.” She takes elements from his paintings and creates a 3D version of them. Kate doesn't believe in perfection and admires the flaws and surprises that come from working with clay and glaze.

KIRBY BELWOOD
Ceramics became Kirby’s primary artistic expression after retiring from the aerospace industry.
As a student he quickly learned that he liked more untraditional looks to his work. Experimenting with Raku, a Japanese method that leaves a myriad of colors within the fired piece was a natural fit for Kirby.
Some of his more traditional pieces are reimagined everyday things designed with a twist.
Kirby has been creating works of art in Peachtree City for the past nine years. Eight of these years, Kirby has been a regular on the Southern Hands Artist Studio Tour every November.
